What is a conflict coach?
A conflict coach guides a person through the examination of a personal conflict.
A coach teaches fundamentals, provides structure to practice, helps develop strategies, and promotes a belief in possibilities.
A conflict coach helps move the conflict from “stuck” by facilitating a process with the individual that:
- Examines the fundamentals of conflict dynamics in the context of the presenting conflict.
- Increases the understanding of self in relation to conflict.
- Reviews communications pertaining to the conflict.
- Provides structure to develop and practice conflict skills.
- Explores interests and evaluates options while developing a plan of action.
- Fosters self-determination.
Why do people use conflict coaching?
People use conflict coaching as a process to resolve conflict when:
- The “other side” is not able to participate in a resolution process.
- They feel a need to increase understanding or skills prior to engaging with the “other side”.
- They want to increase skills for future conflict.
What can be expected as a result of conflict coaching?
The single goal of conflict coaching is to move a conflict toward resolution. Associated benefits include:
- Decrease in emotional pain caused by the conflict.
- Increased awareness of available options.
- Greater understanding of self in conflict situations.
- More skills and confidence.
How does a conflict coach do her/his work?
A conflict coach meets with a person or “one side” of the conflict. The initial meeting is typically scheduled for two hours. During the initial meeting he coach and the individual (or side) will develop a coaching plan. The coaching may be completed during the first meeting or several meetings may be scheduled. Coaching is short-term and conflict specific. It is not therapy, it is not advocacy, it is not adversarial.
What is the fee for conflict coaching?
An hourly fee is charged on a sliding scale basis. Conflict coaching is not reimbursed by insurance.
