“Choice Points” model of Peer Consultation for mediators

Jacqui Clark and June Zellers have developed a method of peer consultation designed specifically for mediators.  Please email us if you have an interest in being trained in this method.  There is also a Choice Points manual available for purchase.

  • “Choice Points” is a model of consulting and questioning between curious mediators — it is not just observation and feedback.
  • “Choice Points” focuses on the mediator’s own values and skills, not those of the observer/consultant.
  • “Choice Points” uses language that is accessible to all mediators regardless of practice venues or training background.
  • “Choice Points” guides mediators to identify elements of disputant’s stories that, although they don’t repeat exactly, will be recognizable and useful to a mediator in the future.

The Choice Points model focuses attention on each moment in the mediation room similar to the attention required in a contemplative inquiry.  The model magnifies those specific moments in mediation when mediators are opening both to what is happening in front of them – the issues, personalities, abilities and framework of the dispute at hand – and to what is happening inside – their reactions, biases, judgments, values, and skills sets.

Choice Points allows mediators to talk about their experience without getting lost in the details of the disputants’ stories.  It also allows mediators to talk about their experience without resorting to the dull conversations that result from statements such as “I always do that when . . .” or “I never do that when . . . .”

“Choice Points” invites you to become refreshed in your work as well as in your professional relationships.  It builds on the curiosity and the values common to mediators.
